Discover the Art of Horse Riding at Château Terre Blanche in the Heart of the Languedoc

Since Gabrielle and Steven purchased the Chateau Terre Blanche in the summer of 2014, they have been traveling from their home in Sydney, Australia to France several times a year. Gabrielle has always loved horse riding and over the years she has searched out equestrian centers in the region. At the beginning, there was a center on the ridge heading to Limoux that provided trail rides all along the forests and hills around Chalabre. It was the perfect way to get to know the French countryside around the village. Riding through the deep, dark forests with the large trees squeaking and swaying was enchanting. One could imagine that those Disney artists must have studied these forests for the animation of the movie Beauty and the Beast. In this setting, one truly becomes part of the French provincial life.

From the Chapelle du Calvaire that sits on a hill above Chalabre, one can see the landscape of the Pyrenees mountains, snow-covered from October to May. The higher ridge above that hill provides an even larger vista of the valley and mountains that border Spain. Even down in the valley around nearby Lac Montbel, one can often get a glimpse of Montségur, the famous Cathar castle ruin. Last May, Gabrielle explored the lush countryside while riding around Lac Montbel with the Léran Equestrian Center. This center provides rides on natural trails and lessons year-round in our mild climate. This center comes recommended for beginner to advanced lessons, guided trails, sunset rides, and family-friendly options, suitable for all skill levels.

Lifelong horse lover, Gabrielle was thrilled to recently discover the Equi Nosce Center for Equine Development Training and Research in nearby Mirepoix. This medieval bastide village is a gem in the region boasting its own Cathedral, bustling market, and a plethora of shops and restaurants as well as the Equi Nosce Equestrian Center. Founded by Elizabeth de Corbigney, the center teaches ethological* horse riding according to her method.  Gabrielle was fortunate enough to have several personal sessions with Elizabeth this summer. Horse coaching for individuals uses “the relationship with the horse and the principles of ethological riding to allow participants to develop their self-knowledge and learn to manage their emotions and feelings, to develop their self-confidence and their physical, emotional and mental balance.”

In addition to experiencing this unique relationship with these highly sensitive and intelligent animals, there are so many health benefits of riding, of equine wellness, and of an authentic connection to nature. Staying at Chateau Terre Blanche offers so many adventures one can take while exploring the French countryside. Enjoy a unique horse-riding experience while staying in Chalabre by booking with one of the riding centers nearby, recommended by equestrian and horse lover, Gabrielle.
